Spencer, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Spencer Community Schools are back in session, and a new transportation plan crafted by Transportation Director Melissa Merida has students and parents attempting to learn a new system, changing some former pick up and drop off spots and transfer. Superintendent Terry Hemann says the change was necessary to control the chaos of previous.

Several concerned parents addressed the school board questioning the changes made and sharing frustration as they try to navigate the change with their children. Hemann points out this is also the first year for Spencer school bus riders have to scan a card to get on the bus.

Merida reported 1082 students were bussed on day one of school, which is around 45% of all eligible students in the district. She reports the card scan students now use to get on the bus helps her track each student and reassure any concerned parents. Parents soon will be able to download the same app and can track their students getting on and off the bus.
