HARTLEY, IA (Northwestiowanow) – A corn-filled semi-trailer was struck by a Canadian Pacific train at a railroad crossing near Hartley Tuesday afternoon.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred around 2:53 p.m. at the Van Buren Avenue railroad crossing near Hartley.

Authorities say 58-year-old Thomas Paul Martin of Reading, Minnesota, was traveling southbound in a 1998 Peterbilt on Van Buren Avenue when he approached the crossing.

Martin told authorities the crossing surface was rough, causing him to focus on the roadway as he approached the tracks.

Investigators say Martin failed to yield at the crossing and an eastbound Canadian Pacific train entered the intersection, striking the trailer of the semi.

The impact tore the corn-filled trailer in half.

Martin was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. The train’s two occupants also reported no injuries.

Damage to the semi was estimated at $60,000, while damage to the train was estimated at $50,000.

Weather was not considered a factor, and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash.

Investigators determined the cause of the collision was Martin’s failure to yield at the railroad crossing.
