Spencer, IA — The City of Spencer has been awarded more than $3.36 million in federal funding to support ongoing flood recovery efforts.

The funding was announced Thursday by U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley and is being provided through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

According to a FEMA notice of award, Spencer will receive $3,295,425 to acquire and demolish 26 residential structures damaged during the June 2024 flooding. Once the properties are purchased and demolished, the land will be converted to permanent open space and restricted from future development.

FEMA officials say removing the homes from flood-prone areas will reduce the risk of future flood damage and help protect public health, safety and community resources.

A separate FEMA grant totaling $73,231.67 will help cover the City’s costs associated with managing the acquisition project.
