Missing Estherville Man Found Safe in a Ravine

Estherville, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — A 67 year old Estherville man with dementia was located in a ravine after a four hour search by multiple law enforcement agencies and volunteers Saturday.

Gary Burkholder was reported missing by his family at 8:40am. Estherville Police, Fire, and Ambulance Crews, and the Emmet County Emergency Management and Sheriff’s Departments starting searching yards, buildings, and vehicles in a wide area since it was unknown which way he might have walked. Two drones were also deployed.

A search crew saw the top of Burkholder’s head in a washout near West North 6th Street and West 6th Avenue North shortly after noon. He was examined by medical professionals at the scene and returned to his family.

Police Chief Brent Shatto thanks the public for their help – especially those who offered access to their personal security camera footage.
