Emmetsburg, IA — The Lost Island Wind Project remains on track to begin construction in 2027.

Development Manager Shane Roche provided an update to the Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors during a regular meeting Tuesday, July 21.

Roche said final designs for the wind farm are nearly complete and will soon be submitted to the county for review.

While some preliminary work has already begun, Roche said the bulk of construction is expected to start next summer, with the wind farm projected to be operational in 2028.

Roche said the project is expected to bring several benefits to the area.

During the update, supervisors raised questions about an ongoing lawsuit involving the project, as well as concerns voiced by some community members.

The lawsuit, filed by Protect Our Aviation, challenges Palo Alto County’s approval of the wind farm, with opponents arguing the proposed turbines could affect operations at the Emmetsburg Municipal Airport.

Roche said maintaining communication and transparency with county officials and landowners will remain a priority as the project moves forward.

Roche declined to comment on the legal challenges, but said developers remain confident in the project and continue moving forward with planning and design work.
