ESTHERVILLE, IA (Northwestiowanow) – City officials in Estherville are increasing discussions about potential regulations on e-bikes and scooters.

Following a regular city council meeting on Monday, July 20, the council brought up growing concerns over electric bikes and scooters, mainly over enforcement and rider safety.

Police have received multiple reports of riders running stop signs and engaging in other unsafe behavior.

Estherville Police Chief Brent Shatto says officials are observing what other communities are doing before they make a decision.

 

 

One challenge facing the city is trying to determine how to address violations committed by younger riders.

 

 

Shatto said city leaders will have to consider what consequences could be put in place for younger riders if an ordinance is eventually adopted.

The chief also emphasized the role parents play in how children operate e-bikes and scooters.

 

 

Discussions on the issue are expected to continue in the coming months and years as e-bikes and scooters become more common.
