Spencer, IA — Young Northwest Iowa musicians will have a chance to learn from performers and music industry professionals during the Classic Rock Experience this weekend.

The event, organized by the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association, combines a day-long workshop with an evening concert open to the public on Saturday, July 18.

Veteran guitarist Kirk “Skinny” Webb says students won’t just learn about songwriting and recording—they’ll actually write and record a song during the workshop.

The program features assistance from Iowa Rock Talent Contest winner Jack Davis, longtime musician Dan Sullivan, and veteran sound engineer Tyler Lowe.

Webb says organizers hope the experience gives young musicians a better understanding of the opportunities available in the music industry while encouraging them to enjoy the creative process.

Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association representative Jill Barr says the event fits perfectly with the organization’s mission of supporting and inspiring young artists.

The day concludes with a concert beginning at 7 p.m. featuring Webb’s band, Into the Gray, along with performances from Davis, Sullivan, Janice Hill and Barr. Audience members will hear songs made famous by artists including Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Heart, and Billy Joel.

In partnership with the Broken Strings Foundation, an acoustic guitar will also be presented to a Clay County youth during the event.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Spencer Community Theatre. General admission is $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show.
