Wind Creates Dangerous Conditions Thursday in Northwest Iowa

Northwest Iowa — (Northwestiowanow.com) — We got the blizzard conditions predicted LAST week by the National Weather Service YESTERDAY instead. Advisories had already been issued early in the week, and sustained winds in excess of 40 mph Thursday caused white-out conditions across the KICD Broadcast area with motorists driving off the roadways, or in several incidents – striking each other.

Getting school children home safely was a challenge. Spencer Community Schools allowed parents to pick up their students early. Pocahontas Area Schools were informed by police that travel was treacherous and wound up keeping out-of-town students at the school until the winds finally died down late in the evening.

Middle and High School principal Andrea Christians has issued a thanks to everyone who made the best of a bad situation saying “The kids were cooperative; the teachers and associates stayed late, the kitchen staff fed everyone supper; the office staff answered calls and helped anyone who needed it; and the brave bus drivers got everyone home safely.”

She also thanks their education partners in the Lauren-Marathon district and Pocahontas Catholic and says local law enforcement did an excellent job at communicating the changing weather conditions and keeping everyone safe.
