Storm Lake, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Storm Lake and Spencer matched up for the final Lakes Conference matchup of the season and foreseeable future in Girls and Boys Basketball.
In the Girls game, Storm Lake was great in the first quarter, hitting 4 3-pointers and getting 7 points from Reagan Dehaan. Spencer really struggled offensively in the first 8 minutes, unable to make many shots anywhere on the floor. The Tornadoes led 17-3 going into the 2nd.
The Tigers struck back with a fury, outscoring Storm Lake 21-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 24-19 lead going into the half.
Spencer passing in the 3rd quarter, specifically in transition and finding the open post. On the flipside, the Spencer defense was doing a good job of minimizing the damage of Storm Lake’s Grace Kenkel by fronting the post and keeping passes from getting down low. The Tigers led 44-31 going into the 4th quarter.
Spencer was able to hold on from there, keeping the Tornadoes at an arms distance in the 4th quarter, and came away with a 55-41 win.
Storm Lake is now 10-10 on the season and 3-5 in the Lakes Conference. Avery Dehaan led the way with 18 points, hitting 5 three-point shots on the evening. Grace Kenkel would finish with 15.
Calista Frankenstein led Spencer with 21 points on the evening. Spencer improves to 10-9 on the year and will finish Lakes Conference play at 3-5.
The Tigers and Tornadoes finish their final Lakes Conference season tied for 3rd in the standings.
The Boys contest started similarly, with Storm Lake dominating the 1st quarter, outscoring Spencer 19-5.
The difference in this game was, Storm Lake never lost that lead. The Tornadoes continued to pile on the lead in the 2nd quarter and led 38-9 at the half.
The Tornadoes continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Spencer in the 3rd and 4th quarters by a combined 30-18 to cruise to a 68-27 route.
Storm Lake, who was the #1 ranked team in Class 3A Monday night, is now 17-2 on the year and will cap off Lakes Conference action at 8-0 despite playing without star Jaidyn Coon and another key piece in Timothy Yanga. Cam Boyd scored 22 in the win with Garbieno Weno adding 15. Storm Lake has won 16 straight Lakes Conference games, the last loss in the League came to Spencer on February 2nd of 2024.
Spencer’s consistency issues continue, after challenging the same Storm Lake lineup on Friday night in a 69-61 loss, losing by 41 only a couple of evenings later. The Tigers fall to 5-13 this season and 3-5 in the Lakes Conference.
The Lakes Conference finale will be played Tuesday night as Cherokee hosts Storm Lake. The Lakes Conference will be absorbed by the Siouxland in the 2026-2027 school year.
