Rockwell City, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer girls and boys’ basketball teams were on the road for a non-conference matchup against South Central Calhoun.

It was a turnover heavy 1st quarter in the girls contest between the two teams. Kennedy Greattinger got off to a quick start for the Tigers, hitting a pair of 3 pointers in 3 total baskets. Spencer led 12-10 after the first quarter.

South Central Calhoun struck back hard in the 2nd quarter, capitalizing on many Spencer turnovers early, building a lead as high as 8 before Spencer widdled it down to a 2-point game going into the locker room.

The Tiger ran the show on both sides of the floor in the second half, outscoring the Titans 15-7 in the 3rd, forcing several South Central Calhoun turnovers with an aggressive full-court press.

Spencer finished strong, outscoring the Titans 15-1 in the 4th to ultimately end the game with a blowout score of 54-34.

The Tigers had 8 scorers on the evening with 3 in double figures. Calista Frankenstein led the way with 16 points while Sydnee Hopkins and Kennedy Greattinger each added 11. Spencer improves to 4-3 on the year, stopping a short two game skid.

The Titans drop to 2-5 on the year and were led by Macie Dorman’s 13 points. Dorman achieved 8 of those at the free throw line.

It was a back-and-forth, low scoring affair in the Boys contest. South Central Calhoun’s Evan Myers hit 3 first quarter 3 pointers for 9 of his teams 13 in the first 8 minutes. Foster Roos did his best to keep Spencer in it, scoring 5 of the Tigers 8.

Spencer was able to hit back strong in the 2nd quarter with some strong defense, taking the lead by as much as 6. The Titans came back to tie it though when Charlie Nattress hit a buzzer beater half-court shot at the end of the quarter to draw the game even at 23.

The Tiger defense still stayed strong in the 3rd, holding South Central Calhoun to only 7 points, and Spencer led 34-30 going into the fourth.

Spencer’s offense went quite in the 4th though, getting outscored 10-3 as South Central Calhoun picked up the 40-37 win.

Spencer’s first win of the season continues to elude them as the Tigers drop to 0-6. Foster Roos led Spencer with 11 points.

South Central Calhoun draws even at 3-3 on the year. Evan Myers scored 16 to pace the Titans, with 14 of those points coming in the first half. Charlie Nattress added 11 in the win.
