Storm Lake, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Storm Lake Fire Department is reporting an electrical failure in a window AC unit that sparked an apartment fire in Storm Lake late last night. (Tuesday, June 2)

Firefighters responded to 220 East 5th Street just before 11:00 p.m. to find heavy smoke pouring from the second floor. Everyone evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported.  While crews contained the flames to a single room, heat and smoke damage has displaced several residents. The Red Cross is currently assisting those families.

Firefighters officially ruled the cause of the blaze as an electrical failure within the window air conditioning unit. The Storm Lake Fire Department was assisted by Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, BVRMC EMS, Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy.
