O’BRIEN COUNTY, IA (northwestiowanow.com) — A Spirit Lake man is in custody after authorities say he opened fire on another motorist earlier this year.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says 33-year-old Jonathan Douglas Oldenkamp was arrested Thursday, December 11th, on a Dickinson County warrant for attempted murder, a Class B felony.

Investigators say the charges stem from a May 25th shooting west of Hartley. Court documents show Fernando Curiel of Hartley called 911 around 4:30 p.m., reporting that a gray BMW pulled alongside his Jeep Gladiator and began firing. Curiel was hit twice but managed to drive himself to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities say six bullet holes were found on Curiel’s vehicle, and a 9mm pistol recovered from Oldenkamp’s storage unit matched bullets from the scene. Investigators also learned Oldenkamp had been driving a 2008 BMW and previously worked at the same Sanborn business as Curiel, who had been his supervisor. Oldenkamp was reportedly terminated and had friction with Curiel.

Following his arrest, deputies say Oldenkamp assaulted two officers while being transported to the O’Brien County Jail, leading to two additional Class D felony charges for assault on persons in certain occupations.

Oldenkamp remains in custody. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 22nd in O’Brien County District Court, and a no-contact order has been issued between Oldenkamp and Curiel.

Law enforcement from Sheldon, Hartley, Spirit Lake, Okoboji, and Dickinson County assisted in the investigation.
