SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – Spencer Hospital has been nationally recognized with the Stroke Rural Recognition Silver Award.

The award, presented by the American Heart Association, recognizes rural hospitals that demonstrate excellence in delivering timely, evidence-based stroke treatment and improving outcomes for patients.

Strokes remain a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and according to the American Heart Association, rural residents face a higher-risk of stroke mortality than urban areas.

Hospital President Brenda Tiefenthaler says the award reflects the dedication of their staff.

She says rural hospitals often face obstacles larger facilities don’t usually have.

The American Heart Association’s “Get With The Guidelines” Silver Award is based on performance measures that include rapid stroke assessment, brain imaging, communication with emergency medical services, timely transfers when necessary, and adhering to evidence-based treatment guidelines.

The American Heart Association praised Spencer Hospital for advancing stroke care in northwest Iowa and helping improve health outcomes for rural residents.
