Students are now back in the halls at the South O’Brien School District, getting a first look at exciting new upgrades to the campus. The work is part of a multi-phase construction project, funded by a recently passed bond referendum.

The superintendent says the project is a direct result of the community’s vote, and the money is being used exactly as intended.

Here’s a quick update on the project: Students and staff are using brand-new spaces, including an auxiliary gymnasium and new vocational classrooms for agricultural, industrial, and metal shop programs. These upgrades are part of the district’s push to provide students with skills for local jobs. The building also features major security and safety improvements, like a new secure administrative entrance and an elevator that makes the entire facility ADA compliant.

The project is far from over. This is only Phase One. The next steps involve the demolition of the 1925 school building and a complete renovation of the North Campus. The superintendent noted that the new community weight room is still awaiting equipment, and the administrative offices won’t be moved to their permanent location on the North Campus until next year.

The superintendent said it was important for the community to see the project done right, which is why they are taking their time to complete each phase.
