Peterson, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Staycation is still a thing, meaning you can stay right here in Northwest Iowa and still see amazing sights you haven’t checked it out before.

Prairie Heritage Center is located in O’Brien County on Highway 10, between Sutherland and Peterson. Initially the center was built 2006 to preserve disappearing tallgrass prairie and provide a venue to learn about the natural history of the Little Sioux River Valley.

O’Brien County Conservation Director Mark Wilson updated what is happening with updates now at the Prairie Heritage Center.

Camping season is around the corner, and it’s easy to reserve now

Wilson is also part of the Conservationists who joined together to push the Iowa DNR to declare the Little Sioux River an official state water trail, known as the Inkpaduta Canoe Trail.

The Prairie Heritage center provides a gateway to the region’s glacial history and conservation efforts, including the management of a resident bison herd. Today, it serves as an essential hub for environmental education, preserving a glimpse of the vast ecosystem that once defined the Iowa landscape.
