STORM LAKE, IA (Northwestiowanow) — Emergency crews responded to a gas leak on the Buena Vista University campus in Storm Lake Tuesday morning.
The Storm Lake Fire Department was dispatched around 11:50 a.m. to the intersection of West 4th Street and Grand Avenue after a contractor struck a large natural gas line while performing underground utility work near Swope Hall.
Storm Lake Police established a one-block cordon as firefighters and BVU staff evacuated nearby buildings. Crews conducted atmospheric monitoring inside several campus facilities, detecting minor to moderate gas readings. Utilities were secured, and Alliant Energy shut down the damaged gas line.
Assisting at the scene were Alliant Energy, Storm Lake Police, Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulances, and BVU staff.
No injuries were reported, and the area was cleared after a second sweep confirmed no residual gas.
