Fallout from Intra-Party Political Endorsement in Clay County

Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — A political story.
In the June 9th Republican primary incumbant Clay County Supervisor Barry Anderson received one thousand 144 votes – 215 votes ahead of the next candidate. That secured his place on the November General Election ballot. A few weeks later Anderson endorsed the Democrat running for Governor. He tells KICD News that’s because he’s worked on legislative issues closely with the Crawford County Supervisor selected by Rob Sand as his running mate.

Anderson’s name was included in an advertisement as a “Rob – publican.” The chairman of the Republican party in Clay County – Tyler Herrig – says his phone started to ring, prompting a special meeting of the county’s central committee, and a formal statement that the party would not actively support Anderson’s re-election.

Herrig tells KICD News they will NOT attempt to remove Anderson’s name from the ballot. Anderson says he understands the process and does NOT take it as a personal insult.

We reached out to the Sand campaign Friday and got this comment from the candidate.

The only Democrat holding county office in Clay County currently is county attorney Travis Johnson. He has updated his personal facebook profile picture to read “Clay County Citizens for Barry.”
