Emmetsburg School Bond Issue Fails

Emmetsburg School Bond Issue Fails

Emmetsburg, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Voters in the Emmetsburg community have turned down a school bond issue for the second time.

The measure failed to get the required 60-percent supermajority to pass, earning 54 percent of the vote on Tuesday.  Emmetsburg Superintendent Cory Jenness says the results are disappointing.

This was the second time the district has tried to pass a bond to relocate the elementary school. A similar attempt last year also failed to reach the 60-percent threshold, despite winning a simple majority.

The superintendent says the needs at West Elementary haven’t gone away. If the bond had passed, it would have raised property taxes by 68 dollars a year on a home valued at 100-thousand dollars. Jenness says the next step is to see what the School Board wants to do next.
