Algona, IA (northwestiowanow) — Starting today, both runways at the Algona Municipal Airport will be closed as work continues on a runway rehabilitation project.

The airport’s main paved runway has been closed since Monday, September 21, with the grass runway remaining accessible during the first week of construction.

The grass runway will now be closed as well, leaving both runways unavailable for about a week.

The rehabilitation project includes approximately 4,000 feet of runway and is expected to be finished by mid-October. The City of Algona will pay almost $24,000 toward the project, with the Federal Aviation Administration covering about 95 percent of the cost.

Last fall, improvements at the airport included a 240-foot extension south of Runway 30, a 200-foot displacement of Runway 12, and turnarounds at both ends of the runway.

A new electrical vault building to support navigational lighting was also constructed, along with new edge lighting for the runway, turnarounds and taxiway.

This project will conclude a series of improvements at the Municipal Airport.
