Des Moines, IA — April was a very active month when it came to precipitation, severe weather, and temperature swings, which included several warm days. State Climatologist Justin Glisan says temperatures were above average.

April 2026 was the sixth-wettest April on record for the state of Iowa. Glisan breaks down the numbers.

The month of April featured more thunderstorms and severe weather events.

A potential Super El Niño is shaping up. In general, El Niño events last about 9 to 12 months, according to NOAA. These climate patterns most often develop during the spring or early summer. Which Glisan goes on to say will be great conditions for plants.
