Storm Lake, IA (northwestiowanow.com) – A 12-year-old boy was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after leading Storm Lake Police on a high-speed chase through residential neighborhoods.

Officers responded to reports of a reckless driver speeding and passing vehicles in the 200 block of Cayuga Street. When police attempted a traffic stop near East Lakeshore Drive and Chautauqua Park Drive, the driver accelerated, ignoring officers and driving through an active construction zone before veering into a residential yard.

The pursuit continued for nearly 10 blocks at speeds exceeding 50 mph before the vehicle came to a stop in the 200 block of Russell Street. The driver, a juvenile male from Storm Lake, was taken into custody without incident.

He was referred to juvenile court on multiple charges, including eluding (a Class D felony), operating without a valid license, reckless driving (two counts), speeding, failing to obey a stop sign, and violating a one-way trafficway. All charges are considered misdemeanors unless otherwise noted.

The boy was released to a parent and is scheduled to appear in juvenile court.
