Perry, IA (KICD)– Law enforcement officials have released new details following a shooting Thursday morning at Perry High School in Central Iowa.

The incident was reported just before 7:40 Thursday morning as students and staff were preparing to return to class following holiday break.

Mitch Mortvedt from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation says officers from the Perry Police Department were on scene within minutes and made immediate entry into the school and began to search for the threat.

The shooter in the incident, according to law enforcement appears to be a student of the school.

Police say one person, only identified as a sixth grade student at Perry Middle School, died from injuries in the incident. Five others, four students and one administrator, were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff in support of the Perry community through sunset on Sunday.
