Milford, IA (KICD)– A Spencer man was seriously hurt in a Friday evening crash involving a piece of farm equipment south of Milford.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was called to the intersection of Highway 71 and 240th Street shortly before 8:30 where it was determined an eastbound pickup driven by 76-year-old Timothy Hemphill of Milford had stopped for cross traffic in the northbound lanes of the highway not realizing the unlit combine head he was pulling was blocking both southbound lanes.

That led to a southbound passenger car driven by 82-year-old Clearance Schweitzer of Spencer colliding with the farm equipment and the vehicle ultimately catching fire.

Hemphill and another person on the scene were able to assist Schwietzer with escaping the vehicle before it became fully engulfed before he was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare for treatment of his injuries.

Hemphill was cited at the scene for failing to yield upon entering a highway.
