Okoboji, IA (KICD)– A fast-spreading invasive plant was discovered in shallow areas of West Okoboji this summer. Because the lake is designated as an “Outstanding Water Body” the Iowa DNR had to go through a permitting process to start treatment. They got that permit Monday.
Fisheries Biologist Mike Hawkins says treatment in the Wahpeton Canals, West Okoboji Harbor, and Triboji Lagoon will be easier than last year when the weed was discovered in East Okoboji.

Application of the product called “ProcellaCor” began Tuesday.

Hawkins says Eurasian Water Milfoil has no seeds, so if they’re successful in killing the current population it should only take one treatment. They’ll reassess next spring.
