Northwest Iowa (KICD)– It has been two years since Mother Nature threw parts of Iowa a curveball that resulted in a record number of tornadoes touching down in a single day.

In total 63 tornadoes were confirmed to have at least briefly touched the ground around the state on December 15th, 2021 with a handful of those being reported in the local area.

While many of the twisters in Northwest Iowa stayed over mostly rural areas, one managed to find its way into Aurelia with EF-1 winds reaching an estimated 110 miles per hour.

Aurelia Police Chief Brian Flikade told KICD News just days after his community had been impacted that it did not take long for additional help to arrive.

Additional local EF-1 tornadoes were also confirmed on this date two years ago near Alta and Storm Lake, Ayrshire and Graettinger, Palmer, Gilmore City, Milford and Larrabee along with an EF-2 packing winds up to 115 miles per hour near Rembrandt.

State Climatologist Justin Glisan also notes the number of tornadoes was not the only record set on that day two years ago as very warm temperatures also worked into the region.

No one was hurt in Iowa or Minnesota in the outbreak that came just days after many locations received several inches of snow. Full summaries on the event can found on special pages created by the National Weather Service offices in Sioux Falls and Des Moines.
